Frequently Asked Questions
-

-

-
I just want a sports massage, can I book?Absolutely. You do not need to be suffering any injury or discomfort to benefit from a sports massage. A sports massage is as much a preventative measure from injury as it is a great injury recovery tool too.
-
What should I wear? Please wear clothing that you are comfortable in and are able to stretch in. Suitable underwear (for women, please do not wear a sports bra as they often cover a large area of your back). Shorts are fine as long as they are loose fitting and allow you to stretch. We will be using large towels throughout your treatment to ensure your modesty is covered.
-
I'm not an athlete or training but I am still in pain, is Sports Massage suitable for me?Absolutely, you don't need to be an Olympian to have sore muscles. If your day is spent glued to a desk or generally immobile then your muscles will thank you for some work.
-
How many sessions will I need? This is very hard to answer as everybody is different. It will very much depend on your individual needs, your lifestyle and the scale of any issues you maybe experiencing. We will know more once we have seen you. We should be able to give a rough estimate after your first session.
-
Does A Sports Massage Hurt?Whilst some of the techniques we use can be uncomfortable, they should never be painful, we always take into consideration your discomfort level and if you're ever unhappy with something we will find a different approach which suits you better.
-
How often should I have a treatment? This will depend entirely upon your personal goals. Many athletes will have monthly maintenance sessions when they aren't training as regularly or as hard. These sessions may increase in frequency as their training ramps up in frequency and intensity. The ideal is to find what works for you personally. To reduce muscle tension and keep you performing at your best without sustaining any injury. We can discuss this during your first assessment/session.
-
Is there a difference between a physiotherapist and soft tissue therapist?A Physiotherapist is diagnostic and an Allied Health Professional. As a soft tissue therapist, we do not diagnose but we provide a hands on treatment along with exercise and rehabilitation advice.
-
What effects are there after any treatment? These vary from person to person and often from session to session. For some you will just feel free, light and able to move. Whereas some people may feel a bit more worked on. If the massage has been deeper tissue, some clients may experience some post-treatment soreness, but this will disappear after a day or two, don’t worry about this as it is completely normal. There is usually no reason why you wouldn't be able to go on with your day like normal including any training sessions you had planned, however I will always recommend talking any planned exercise. It is always a good idea to stay hydrated following a treatment.
-
What is soft tissue therapy/sports massage?Soft Tissue Therapy goes beyond just a simple massage. Soft tissue therapy is all encompassing and includes the initial assessment, the treatment, and also the management of any soft tissue injuries, pain, or discomfort across your muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia (connective tissue). Our main goal is to release muscular tension, reduce pain, improve joint movement and flexibility, and to aid recovery from any sporting or daily activities.
-
What is ScarWork?Sharon Wheelers ScarWork© is a non-invasive manual therapy designed to treat scar tissue, fibrosis, and adhesions. These form when underlying layers of skin become stuck together. This type of treeatment can help with pain caused from scaring and can also provide improvement in overall movement and posture that maybe affected by scars.
-
How many sessions will I need? The number of treatments you will need will vary on an indivdual basis dependant upon any complications that may be involved. The age and size of the scar is also a factor, as is the final outcome you wish to achieve along with your budget. Clients can often see and feel improvements after 1 or 2 sessions, although 4 to 8 sessions are quite often recommended. This will be discussed with you at your first session and will depend on your required outcome.
-
How long does a scar take to heal?Everyone is different and repair at varying rates, but a scar can take up to two years to reach maturity. Your body is a living thing, this means that changes happen constantly, don’t be surprised if it takes longer for a larger scar to heal. There are many ways that you can positively influence the way your scar heals. If you are ready, we can help you with the best ways to look after your scar.
-
I have an old scar, will ScarWork still help?Yes, absolutely! The age of your scar does not matter. ScarWork therapy is gentle and effective and can still functionally help older scars and the surrounding areas feel better.
-
Is ScarWork safe? Does it hurt?ScarWork therapy is safe and does not cause any pain. All the massage-based techniques we employ are gentle and rely on light touch only. We do not use any “friction” techniques on or around the scar. The treatment should feel comfortable and should never hurt.
-
I can feel a pulling sensation in my scar. Can you help me?Sensations like these are a common occurance but are not pleasant. ScarWork therapy can help to reduce or even omit these sensations. We offer a holistic approach to scar recovery. We can discuss techniques, postural and lifestyle advice to improve the way your body moves after pregnancy, surgery or injury.
-
My scar is numb, can ScarWork help with this?Yes it can. After pregnancy, surgery or injury nerves are sometimes cut/damaged and the body is healing itself. Sometimes the individual may not feel “connected” to that part of their body, where surgery/injury has occurred, and so not want to touch the scar. ScarWork therapy can help with numbness and decreased sensation, using “feather light” touch. This can also help the individual re connect with that body part.
-
My scar is red, is that normal? After surgery or traumatic injury and up to two years after, the scar is still healing and recovering. The redness should subside, ScarWork therapy could help make a difference and speed up the process.
